Pedro's Trees captures a familiar California scene: wind-shaped trees standing watch over a sheltered coastline while sailboats drift across the water below. Built from clean, layered shapes, the composition reflects the Arts & Crafts ideal of finding beauty through simplicity.

The design comes from Pedro Joseph de Lemos (1882–1954), a leading voice in the California Arts & Crafts movement and a printmaker celebrated for his color woodblock prints of coastal trees and quiet shorelines. This illustration first appeared as Tree Posters in his influential 1920 book Applied Art, and carries the same flat planes and bold outlines as his woodblock work. De Lemos was also a devoted lover of trees—he once bought up a parcel of land to spare a stand of old oaks from the axe—and championed design drawn straight from the natural world. More than a century later, this graceful coastal landscape remains as striking as the day it was made.
