Our Alhambra Tile, on CBS Sunday Morning

This past Sunday, the tile pictured above — our 6x6 Alhambra "sun" — appeared at the close of a story on CBS Sunday Morning, and the timing made it especially meaningful.

Correspondent Seth Doane's segment told the story of a train carrying roughly 2,500 Jewish prisoners toward a concentration camp in the final days of World War II, liberated by American soldiers before it reached its destination — a story uncovered through historian Matthew Rozell's oral history project and his book, A Train Near Magdeburg. As the segment closed, our sun tile appeared onscreen, followed by CBS's "Shana Tova!" greeting for Rosh Hashanah.

The night before it aired, CBS Sunday Morning's Felicia Schementi wrote to let us know: "Your sun is a beautiful bright fit to this story of survival."

We were honored to play even a small visual part in a story about rescue, resilience, and hope.

The tile itself has its own story. This particular colorway was hand-glazed here in Ann Arbor by our bulb glazer Brielle, using the historic Cuenca raised-line technique. The Alhambra design was created by Motawi founder Nawal Motawi — its radiant center sun felt especially fitting at the close of a segment about survival.

A belated Shana Tova to all who celebrated, and watch Seth Doane's full segment here.
