8x8 Ann Arbor Bicentennial

The Ann Arbor Bicentennial tile is an ode to the hometown of Motawi Tileworks, celebrating 200 years of the rich history and cultural heritage that make the city the vibrant and dynamic place that it is today.

Nawal Motawi founded Motawi Tileworks in 1992 in the garage of an Ann Arbor home. Over the last 30+ years, the company's growth has been steady, with more spacious digs becoming necessary not once but twice. Today, Motawi Tileworks is an Ann Arbor institution.

The tile features city icons such as the 1853 Kempf House, street musician Shakey Jake, and the perennial Hash Bash (symbolized by a cannabis leaf). It was created in partnership with the city and Destination Ann Arbor.

  • Motawi tiles are striking art pieces and installation accents. Each tile is made by hand and with heart in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We embrace variation and handmade beauty: Our time-honored methods produce a nuanced range of color with depth and translucence.
  • Actual Tile Size: Approximately 7 7/8” x 7 7/8”. As each Motawi tile is crafted by hand, dimensions may vary slightly by up to 1/16".
  • Tiles are 5/8" thick and have a notch at the back for hanging.

Easels are an elegant option for art tile display. Fabricated from powder-coated steel, our easels are locally made and feature durable single-piece construction.

  • Medium easel: holds any unframed tile larger than 3 inches (recommended for most of our tiles if unframed).
  • Large easel: holds any framed tile or any unframed tile larger than 4 inches.
  • Small easel: holds 3 and 4-inch tiles (unframed).

Our quarter-sawn oak frames, handmade by Dard Hunter Studios, are available with a natural Oak or Ebony finish. They can hang horizontally or vertically, or perch on our large easels. Frame features include mitered corners and stapled joints.

    • This frame’s outer dimensions are 11-1/2" x 11-1/2".
    • Frame width is 2".
    • Any framed tile can pair with our large easel.
    • Note: Frame woodgrain and stain opacity varies.
