Design Stories | Skylight Fireplace

Posted by on

Linda Taylor and Robin Henke have been fans of Motawi Tileworks for many years, in fact most of the walls in their suburban Detroit home have Motawi polychrome art tiles on them. So naturally, when they decided to spruce up their fireplace, they knew it had to be Motawi. Linda said "it's the top, the pinnacle, the Porsche of tile."

You kind of have to just trust them and they came up with something we loved.

Linda and Robin worked with designers Colleen Crawley and Julie Baty to come up with the perfect design. Robin had fallen in love with the Frank Lloyd Wright Collection® 4x8 Skylight polychrome tile and originally wanted a random array of field tiles to surround this beautiful tile. She then decided she wanted the design to be more balanced and Colleen and Julie were happy to accommodate. "You kind of have to just trust them and they came up with something we loved." The rich 2019 Sepia glaze of the field tiles were chosen because they exuded warmth; Motawi's glossy 2021 Bottle Brown glaze adds shiny, yet subtle accents. Linda can often be found sitting on the hearth, running her hands over the smooth tiles because she just loves how they feel.

When the tiles arrived ready to be installed, Linda admits she was nervous, but the installer she hired was as professional as he was precise and everything fit in so nicely.
