Nawal Motawi on the 18th Green!

Nawal Motawi will be front and center on the 18th green for the trophy presentation at the inaugural Volvik LPGA Championship at Travis Pointe Country Club in Ann Arbor later today. National coverage of the tournament and Nawal presenting the champion with the trophy will be from 3-6 pm EDT on the Golf Channel. For a bit more fun, Nawal will be a celebrity score-board attendant at 1pm! Cool!

Designed by Nawal Motawi herself, the Volvik LPGA Championship trophy is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece made just for the winner. The 12x12” tile is the largest tile that can be pressed on Motawi’s 60-ton RAM press which required a special case that contained the over 100-pound mold made just for this one tile.

The tile spent an extended period of time in the dryer before it was kiln-fired for its first firing – a process that lasted nearly a week! After the initial firing (called bisque firing), the trophy was carefully and meticulously hand glazed by an artisan using a bulb syringe. The result: the ultra-contemporary design which plays with the brightly colored Volvik dots in a way that only Motawi can do.

The golf tournament will support the University of Michigan’s location for the National Network of Depression Centers that houses the Military Support Programs and Networks. The MSPN provides pre- and post- deployment mental health support and treatment for military members, veterans, and their families. Motawi is distributing commemorative posters and collecting donations for the NNDC. A portion of the proceeds from commemorative tiles sold at the event will also benefit the same organization.
