About Motawi 

Founded in a garage in 1992, Motawi Tileworks has grown to be a nationally respected art tile studio, employing more than 20 artisans in a 6000 square foot studio. We design and handcraft made-to-order architectural tile for residential and commercial installations and a collection of gift tile that are sold as individual art pieces.  Motawi Tiles are distributed through a channel of upscale tile showrooms and over 350 galleries, gift stores and museum shops across North America.  Customers can also purchase tile or receive project design assistance in our studio gallery here in Ann Arbor.    

Studio Life

The studio and office atmosphere is productive, cheerful, and occasionally goofy. Staff work schedules vary and are tailored to the demands of the ceramic process. The work is divided between six departments and employees generally work in the department for which they were hired, although everyone is expected to pitch in (“slosh”) from time to time in any department that needs help.

Guided tours occur weekly, so the studio is kept tidy and employees are expected to interact in a friendly and informative way with Tileworks visitors. Continuous process improvement is a key facet of the environment, so ability to adapt cheerfully to changes is essential.  Adherence to currently defined procedures is paramount and key production data is tracked zealously. Other key features of studio life are the monthly staff luncheon and Cake Day.
